About Ms. Karen

I’ve always loved music and it didn’t take long for me to figure out that I love teaching and helping people.

Formal music lessons began when I was 4 years old and started taking piano lessons. However, this wasn’t the start of my music journey! My parents loved music and my older siblings played piano, so I was hearing music from the beginning of my life! When my mother saw that I was drawn to music, she enrolled me in Kindermusik, an early childhood music program (great for babies and pre-schoolers!) I don’t remember much from that time in my life, but I have little blips of memories filled with joy as I was immersed in learning music!

When I was in high school, I FINALLY got to take voice lessons!! Unfortunately, back then it was rare to find a voice teacher that would teach young children (and it still can be to this day!). To hold me over until then I joined the children’s choir at church, participated in musicals, and sang in Circle the State with Song (a state-wide choral festival in Indiana).

Fast forward to college - I decided that I wanted to learn how to be a great teacher. Indiana University had a great program that allowed me to major in elementary and special education! The program was called “Teaching All Learners.” After 4 years of hard work, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree and an understanding of how to meet each child’s unique needs. Of course, I kept up with my music studies while I was there too.

Now, after starting my own business and having the pleasure of starting children on their own musical journeys… I am STILL learning! For me, learning never stops. I’m a member of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), Vibrant Music Teaching, and The Speakeasy Cooperative so that I can continue to take part in professional development and keep up with the best and most updated methods for learning music!

I bring all of this experience and learning (plus lots of care and attention) to my lessons so that your child can have a wonderful music experience and love music as much as I do!

"The girls were taking piano and voice lessons and they absolutely loved their time with Ms. Karen, she’s patient and very loving with her students.  I will definitely recommend her to anybody that’s looking to place their kids in music lessons. My kids had been taking piano lessons somewhere else, they were good but the attention that Ms. Karen gives her students is hard to find."
