9 Signs Your Child is Ready to Try Piano Lessons TODAY

Some children can start piano lessons as young as 3 years old.  I started piano lessons myself at 4 years old.  However, it is more important to look at each child’s development rather than their age to see if they are ready.

Here are some things to consider:

  1. Does your child enjoy listening to music or show interest in piano?

  2. Does your child sing, dance/move, or clap along to music?

  3. Can your child answer questions and speak clearly with other adults?

  4. Can your child sit and listen to short stories?

  5. Is your child able to follow simple directions?

  6. Can your child be redirected easily when distracted?

  7. Can your child name their body parts (hand, finger, arm, etc.)?

  8. Does your child know the difference between banging on the piano and playing the piano?

  9. Is your child able to move their thumb or pointer finger independently?

If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, your child could benefit from trying out piano lessons now!

If the answer to these questions was mostly “no,” you may want to wait to start piano lessons.  You can still expose your child to music by listening to a variety of music at home, exploring instruments, or even signing up for an early childhood music class such as Kindermusik!
